Peter Dutton’s Remarks induced Death Threats

Peter Dutton, the Immigration Minister of Australia has sparked a huge controversy week when he announced that it was a ‘mistake’ to allow Lebanese Muslims migrants enter the country during the 1970s as due to this, the threat of terrorism has increased.

Dutton earlier stated,

“The advice I have is that out of the last 33 people who have been charged with terrorist-related offences in this country, 22 of those people are from second and third generation Lebanese-Muslim background.”

Dutton stated that he wanted an “honest discussion” about the immigration. Senator Pat Dodson slammed Dutton’s comments as stupid ad due to his comments there have been death threats for a Muslim Labor MP.

Dodson talked about hid own fight for freedom. He was born before the 1967 referendum, at the time when the indigenous Australians were not counted in the census.

He stated, “There was a hell of a lot wrong with freedom if you had to fight to experience it. If this nation cannot stand up for the weakest and the poorest and those who are most vulnerable because of their race, their ethnicity, or their beliefs, then we have become a very sad replication of what democracy is about. Racism is something that isn’t growing wild out there in the fields – it’s actually tendered in a flowerbox sitting on the windowsills of flats and houses.”

Dutton’s comments has also led an Egyptian born, counter- terrorism expert, Aly to receive threatening emails. According to Dutton, Aly should ask her own leader for the answers.

He said,

“The question she should be asking is of Bill Shorten, why did he seek to whip this up into an issue of political advantage for himself? Why did he seek to misrepresent my words?”

Many has deemed Dutton’s remarks as a fascist, white supremacy ideology.

Dr. Clarke Jones, former national security officer said that these remarks risk "creating the terrorists of the future, if I want to be blunt”

He stated, “We are certainly not reducing the threat, we are contributing to the threat by those statements. Effective intervention means working with young kids and the only way you can get to young kids is working with communities. The government has taken a 10 or 15-year step backward.”

For the past few years, anti- immigrations have been on the rise in most countries especially in U.S,Europe and Australia.
